Kotak says experience prompted Bhuvneshwar recall

Kotak cites experience and IPL form as key reasons behind Bhuvneshwar's selection for the New Zealand T20I series.

India assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak said Bhuvneshwar Kumar's recall to the T20I squad for the New Zealand series owed much to the experience the 36-year-old would bring. Kotak made the comments at the pre-match press conference ahead of India's second T20I against West Indies in Ranchi on Thursday. He noted that the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and the presence of several young bowlers had highlighted the need for an experienced seamer.

Bhuvneshwar has taken 48 wickets in 30 IPL matches over the last two seasons for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Kotak said the selectors likely considered the veteran's recent form and his suitability for New Zealand conditions. The pacer last played for India in November 2022.

Kotak declined to comment on Mohammed Shami's prospects of a return, saying he is not a selector. Shami last represented India in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy and has continued performing for Bengal in domestic cricket.
