Mohammed Shami skips Bengal Ranji match after New Zealand snub

Mohammed Shami was not included in Bengal's playing XI for their second Ranji Trophy match after being overlooked for India's New Zealand tour.

Bengal faced Services in round two of the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 at the Airforce Complex Ground Palam in New Delhi on Sunday, yet Mohammed Shami was absent from the side. Sportstar understands he trained with the squad the day before, but no official explanation has been given for his omission. In the opening fixture against Delhi, Shami had taken five wickets, four of them in one innings, and his younger brother Mohammed Kaif stepped into the team in his place.

Shami has appeared regularly for Bengal across domestic events and also represented East Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2026-27. He has not represented India since the Champions Trophy 2025 and was again omitted from the squad for the forthcoming New Zealand tour. Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar likewise stayed away because both players have been selected for India A duty in New Zealand.
