Mumbai Indians part ways with head coach Mahela Jayawardene

Mumbai Indians have ended their association with head coach Mahela Jayawardene after the franchise finished ninth in IPL 2026. Jayawardene coached the side across two stints from 2017 to 2026 and led them to three IPL titles.

The 49-year-old first took charge in 2017 and guided Mumbai to the 2017, 2019 and 2020 titles before stepping away in 2022 to become the franchise's global head of performance. He returned as head coach in 2025 but could not reverse the team's recent struggles.

Owner Nita Ambani thanked Jayawardene for his contribution and said he would remain part of the MI family. The franchise has begun the search for a replacement and is understood to be in contact with at least three candidates.
