Mumbai name Ayush Mhatre vice-captain for Ranji Trophy; Suryakumar left out of squad
Mumbai handed leadership responsibility to the 19-year-old while resting Suryakumar Yadav and managing Shardul Thakur's injury.
Mumbai appointed 19-year-old Ayush Mhatre as vice-captain to Siddhesh Lad for the new Ranji Trophy season. The India Under-19 captain was named alongside experienced players in the 16-member squad for the season-opener against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium. Chief selector Rajesh Pawar said the selection committee wanted to groom Mhatre alongside a senior leader.
Suryakumar Yadav made himself available but was left out of the opening fixture as Mumbai prioritised giving younger players opportunities. Pawar said Suryakumar had not played red-ball cricket for 18 months and needed time to regain his rhythm. Shardul Thakur is also unavailable after suffering a finger fracture during training.
Yashasvi Jaiswal will feature in the opener. Mumbai won their first match by a bonus point against Chandigarh inside three days. Ayush Mhatre sustained a Grade 4 right hamstring tear during that game and is ruled out for four to six weeks. Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Suryansh Shedge have joined the squad for the match against Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.
