Saurabh Tiwary says cricket has become a power-hitting game

Saurabh Tiwary says modern cricket rewards power-hitting and that even 15-year-olds now dominate. The former India batter, now Jharkhand cricket secretary, wants to win the Ranji and Syed Mushtaq Ali trophies for his state.

Former India batter Saurabh Tiwary said he would not rank among the top 100 hitters in today's game. Speaking at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, the Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary noted that every second batter hits well and cited 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's IPL performances as evidence. Tiwary added that the shift extends beyond T20 cricket, with batters scoring double hundreds in 43 or 44 overs.

Tiwary, who scored more than 8,000 first-class runs at an average above 47, played three ODIs for India and featured in the early IPL seasons. He said his 24-year career gives him insight into what players need. Since taking over as association secretary last year, he has opened Ranchi stadium facilities to both male and female cricketers from the state.

Tiwary aims to achieve as an administrator what he could not as a player. He won the Vijay Hazare Trophy but never the Ranji or Syed Mushtaq Ali titles, and he wants Jharkhand to win those tournaments. He was part of India's 2008 under-19 World Cup-winning squad alongside Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.
