Shami, Jadeja, Chahal and Bhuvneshwar face uncertain futures after New Zealand squad omissions

Four senior players omitted from New Zealand ODI squad as selectors look ahead to 2027 World Cup.

Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were left out of India's ODI squad for New Zealand, raising questions about their places ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Shami hasn't played since the 2025 Champions Trophy final despite taking five wickets in his Ranji Trophy opener. Jadeja was dropped after the West Indies series, with Naman Dhir now competing as a spin-bowling all-rounder.

Chahal last played for India in August 2023 and has since retired from first-class cricket. Bhuvneshwar earned a T20I recall for the fifth West Indies match but, at 36, remains outside the ODI setup. Selectors retained 12 players across both squads, including Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj, who are also in the Test squad.

India will play five ODIs, five T20Is and two Tests on the tour that begins October 22.
