Starc says Hazlewood illness hurt Australia more than Lyon omission
Mitchell Starc said Josh Hazlewood's illness affected Australia more than Nathan Lyon's omission in the second Test against South Africa.
Mitchell Starc says Josh Hazlewood's dodgy prawn hit Australia harder than the call to leave Nathan Lyon out. Hazlewood spent all of day two in his hotel room and managed just 14 overs across the Test, nine of them after lunch on day three.
Australia looked like they had the match in hand when South Africa slipped to 110 for six on the third morning. The hosts clawed back through two century partnerships with the tail, declaring at 425 for nine. Scott Boland took five for 81, but the rest of the attack had to improvise — part-timers and Beau Webster's medium pace filled 34 overs.
Starc passed 450 Test wickets with three for 89. He pointed out Hazlewood returned below his best and that the side never planned to start a bowler short. Australia closed at three for one after Kagiso Rabada pinned Nic Maddinson for a duck with the fourth ball of the innings.
