Stephen Fleming says England Test coach should be English
Stephen Fleming believes the England Test head coach role should primarily be held by an English coach despite his own appointment.
Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said the England Test head coach position should be held by an English representative. Fleming, who was appointed in July and begins his role in South Africa in December, made the comment in an interview with the BBC.
Fleming acknowledged his own appointment but emphasised that developing coaches from within the county system and bringing back former players should remain priorities. England have had only two English Test coaches this century, Peter Moores and Chris Silverwood, with Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher and Andy Flower and Australian Trevor Bayliss achieving success in the role.
Fleming said the coaching setup will include county coaches and past players at various times. He described the approach as inclusive while maintaining focus on developing English coaching talent alongside the current staff.
