Steve Smith reaches 11,000 Test runs in 226 innings
Smith joined Ponting and Border in Australia's 11,000-run club during a difficult first innings at St George's Park.
Steve Smith became the 12th batter and the third Australian to reach 11,000 Test runs during the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha on Wednesday. The milestone came in his 226th innings, placing him fifth on the all-time list for fewest innings required.
Smith scored 28 off 88 balls before being bowled by Wiaan Mulder as Australia were dismissed for 99 in reply to South Africa's 425 for 9 declared. Ricky Ponting leads Australian run-scorers with 13,378 runs, followed by Allan Border with 11,174.
Australia trail by 326 runs after Nic Maddinson fell for a duck to Kagiso Rabada on the third evening. The second Test continues on Thursday with Australia under pressure to avoid an innings defeat.
