Steve Smith's scans confirm cervical facet joint injury
Smith's neck injury ruled him out of the Cape Town Test after failed fitness attempts. He is expected to return for the New Zealand series in six weeks.
Scans have confirmed Steve Smith's neck injury as a cervical facet joint problem. He underwent the scans on Friday, and the damage left him unable to turn his head freely.
Two days before the Test, Smith spent 35 minutes in the nets trying to prove his fitness. He tried again 90 minutes before the start but couldn't get through a session. The scans settled it.
Australia expect him back for their home series against New Zealand, which begins in six weeks. That leaves them 10 Tests across three months starting with that tour.
