Sunil Gavaskar hails Shreyas Iyer after T20I century

Sunil Gavaskar said Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten 102 against West Indies silenced doubts about his captaincy and batting form. Iyer scored the century off 43 balls and led India to an eight-wicket win in the series opener in Lucknow.

Gavaskar said the innings showed Iyer's ability to deliver under pressure and that the captaincy role had not affected his batting. Iyer had managed only two fifties in his first seven games as India captain before the match.

Iyer's hundred took him to seventh in the ICC T20I rankings. He also became the first Indian captain to score a T20I century in a successful run chase. Gavaskar called for patience with Sanju Samson after the opener's string of low scores.
