Suryakumar Yadav recalls Rohit Sharma conversation after 2024 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav said Rohit Sharma asked him about his views on leadership while the team was stuck in Barbados after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. The then BCCI secretary Jay Shah later called to inform him that he would be the next full-time T20I captain. Suryakumar said he had captained at Under-19 and first-class level but was not expecting the role at that stage.

He said Shah told him to handle the team the way Rohit had done and emphasised the challenge of winning the 2026 World Cup on home soil. Suryakumar led India to victory in that tournament, becoming the first team to defend the title and the first to win it at home. He said he was confident he had not disappointed the selectors.

Suryakumar took over the captaincy after Rohit retired from the format following the 2024 triumph.
