Tilak Varma is redefining the modern T20 finisher role by proving that a measured start can be as lethal as an explosive one

Tilak Varma's unbeaten 51 off 26 balls, after reaching just 17 off 13, showed how restraint early and acceleration later can win matches.

Tilak Varma scored an unbeaten 51 from 26 balls to guide India to a four-wicket win over New Zealand in the second T20I at Christchurch. India were 112 for six in the 15th over needing 69 from the last five when Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy began their unbroken 69-run stand. Varma hit six fours and one six in his 26-ball innings.

The left-hander took his time early, reaching 10 off nine balls and 17 off 13. He said he had promised Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak that if he stayed till the end India would win. He also revealed the plan was to wait for pace after the spinners had been effective.

Varma and Reddy scored 34 runs from the final 18 balls to complete the chase with one delivery remaining. India now lead the five-match series 2-0.
