Sanju Samson reveals India’s powerplay approach in record chase
The opener said the team aims to finish games early by maintaining positive intent from the first over.
Sanju Samson said India’s strategy in the first T20I was to keep shape and maintain positive intent in the powerplay. He and Abhishek Sharma scored 93 runs in the first six overs, leaving India needing 132 from the remaining 14 overs. Samson scored 67 off 33 balls with eight fours and four sixes. He said the openers felt the match could be finished in the first half after the strong start. New Zealand’s spinners later took four wickets, but Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the innings before Naman Dhir sealed the win. Samson added that the team looks to capitalise on any strong start regardless of the target.

Samson’s comments confirm that India now treat powerplay dominance as a deliberate match-winning tactic rather than a bonus.
