Shreyas Iyer says Vaibhav Sooryavanshi must wait for opportunity

Shreyas Iyer confirms Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will continue to wait behind Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson for T20I opportunities.

India captain Shreyas Iyer said 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to remain patient despite his strong IPL performances. Sooryavanshi did not feature in any of the five T20Is against the West Indies that ended in a 2-2 draw.

Iyer said the team would continue backing established openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who have been consistent throughout the series. Samson scored 168 runs across five matches while Abhishek added 145, with both registering two half-centuries.

Sooryavanshi last played for India in the Asian Games final against Pakistan. Iyer told the youngster after the series that he must trust his process and wait for his chance rather than focus on immediate selection.

By publicly reinforcing the pecking order, Iyer signals that selection will be driven by proven consistency rather than recent franchise form alone.
