Shreyas Iyer backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to dominate Indian cricket

Shreyas Iyer predicts a bright future for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, describing him as a destructive batter who will dominate when his chance arrives.

India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer said 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will dominate Indian cricket when his opportunity arrives. Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs in IPL 2026 and earned a senior call-up but has not featured consistently in the playing XI.

Iyer described Sooryavanshi as a silent and charming presence in the dressing room who becomes destructive on the field. He said he interacts with the youngster about life outside cricket because everyone else talks to him about the game.

Sooryavanshi has played eight T20Is since his debut against England in July 2026, scoring two half-centuries and winning one Player of the Series award. Iyer said the presence of established openers means Sooryavanshi must wait, but his time will come.

Iyer’s public endorsement frames Sooryavanshi’s current absence as a queueing issue rather than a talent question, protecting the teenager from premature scrutiny.
