Shreyas Iyer said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chance in the India T20I side because the current openers have been consistent. He spoke after India's five-match series against West Indies ended in a 2-2 draw following a rain washout at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Iyer said the 15-year-old has been told to stay patient and keep his mindset light. Sooryavanshi last played for India in the Asian Games final against Pakistan, where he scored 15 with two sixes. The captain added that two batters who won the World Cup have held their places through consistent run-scoring.

Iyer conceded that India could have won the series 3-1 if the bowlers had executed better in the second and fourth matches. He praised West Indies captain Shai Hope for his consistent performances throughout the series.

Sooryavanshi's continued absence shows the team management values proven white-ball performers over raw IPL numbers when the World Cup cycle is only a year away.
