VVS Laxman named India men's head coach for Asian Games 2026
VVS Laxman takes charge of India at the Asian Games 2026 while Gambhir stays with the senior team.
VVS Laxman will coach India at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, with Shreyas Iyer as captain. The appointment was made because the tournament clashes with India's home ODI series against West Indies.
Laxman led India to gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, so the BCCI kept a separate staff to let Gautam Gambhir stay with the senior side for the West Indies matches.
India open their campaign on 28 September against the Group A runners-up.

By splitting the coaching duties, the BCCI has quietly put a hard cap on how much work Gambhir can be asked to handle — a practical move that may set a template for future multi-format overlaps rather than a one-off fix.
