Shubman Gill was dismissed for one on his return to Ranji Trophy action as Punjab reached 149 for three against Chhattisgarh on day one in New Chandigarh. The India captain was cleaned up by spinner Ajay Mandal after five deliveries as Punjab lost their third wicket. Uday Saharan won the toss and elected to bat, with Gill joining the match after the hosts lost their second wicket.

The 22-year-old Saharan continues as captain despite Gill's presence in the side. Gill last played a Ranji Trophy match for Punjab in January 2026. The India captain is seeking red-ball match practice ahead of the two-Test series in New Zealand that begins on November 19.

Punjab are looking for their first outright victory of the 2026-27 season after earning three points from their opening-round draw against Assam. Umesh Yadav took seven wickets in that match, while Gurnoor and spinners Emanjot Chahal and Harpreet Brar also contributed.

CricHubb Take

Gill's brief Ranji outing highlights the tension between international commitments and domestic preparation, where even the India captain must queue for batting time under a younger skipper.
