Shubman Gill managed just one run in his first Ranji Trophy innings of the season before India's Test series against New Zealand.

India Test captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 1 in his first Ranji Trophy innings of the season as Punjab faced Chhattisgarh at New Chandigarh on 18 October. Gill walked in at number four and lasted five balls before left-arm spinner Ajay Mandal bowled him. Punjab closed the day at 269 for 4 with captain Uday Saharan unbeaten on a century.

Gill returned to domestic red-ball cricket to face quality bowling before India's two-Test series against New Zealand that begins on 19 November. His last Ranji outing was in January 2026 when he scored 14 across two innings against Saurashtra. Head coach Amit Uniyal said Gill wants to stay involved with Punjab's domestic campaign.

Rinku Singh scored an unbeaten 118 for Uttar Pradesh against Goa, while Priyansh Arya fell on 199 and Ayush Badoni hit 115 for Delhi against Gujarat on the opening day of round two.

CricHubb Take

Gill's early dismissal highlights the gap between limited-overs form and red-ball preparation. The India captain faces a compressed window to regain touch before the New Zealand Tests, making every remaining innings critical. Punjab's decision to field him under Uday Saharan's captaincy suggests the focus is purely on match practice rather than leadership duties.
