Shubman Gill urges India to finalise 2027 World Cup combination

Shubman Gill says India cannot afford further experimentation and must settle on its 2027 World Cup combination from the next series.

India captain Shubman Gill says the team does not have time to experiment with combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. He wants the side to begin playing with its preferred lineup from the next series onwards. Gill made the comments after India completed a 2-1 series win over the West Indies.

Gill identified fielding and death bowling as areas that need immediate improvement. He noted that India dropped around seven catches across the three-match series and described the fielding performance as sloppy. The captain also said the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya due to injuries and scheduling conflicts has hampered the bowling attack.

Gill added that players like Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi will remain in contention for the No. 8 all-rounder spot. He stressed that the team needs a seamer who can contribute with the bat at that position for the World Cup.

Gill's insistence on locking the combination now effectively sidelines fringe players who needed more opportunities to prove themselves, narrowing the selection window before the World Cup.
