Chahal says Rohit told him India wanted batters till No. 8 for 2023 World Cup
Chahal recalls Rohit Sharma explaining India's preference for batting depth and an extra seamer ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Yuzvendra Chahal revealed that Rohit Sharma told him before the 2023 ODI World Cup that India wanted more batting depth and an extra fast bowler. The leg-spinner said the explanation gave him clarity and he stopped thinking about selection after the tournament. Chahal last played for India in August 2023.
He added that he entered IPL 2024 focused on enjoyment rather than selection pressure. After taking 18 wickets in 15 matches for Rajasthan Royals, Rohit told him he wanted him back in the side and would raise the issue in the selection meeting. Chahal retired from first-class cricket earlier this year but has kept open the possibility of a white-ball return.
The 36-year-old is the IPL's all-time leading wicket-taker. His last international appearance came more than three years ago.

Chahal's account shows selectors had already settled the combination before the squad was picked. The clarity helped him accept the decision, but it also closed the door on any late changes even when injuries struck the chosen attack.
