India head coach Gautam Gambhir thanked outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar after his tenure ended on October 4. Gambhir posted on X that the three ICC trophies India won during Agarkar's time reflected his team-first approach. Agarkar had informed the BCCI in September that he would not seek an extension.

The BCCI invited applications on Tuesday to fill the vacant position on the five-member senior men's selection committee. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is serving as interim chairman and chaired the meeting that picked India's squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour. Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh remain the other members of the panel.

Agarkar took charge in July 2023. India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup during his stint.

Agarkar's departure removes the selector who backed the current leadership group through three ICC titles. The next permanent appointment will shape whether that continuity is preserved or deliberately reset ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.
