BCCI admits five teams too few; plans WPL expansion sessions

The BCCI will explore adding teams after acknowledging the current five-team structure is inadequate.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the board will hold brainstorming sessions to expand the Women's Premier League. He noted that five teams are too few for the growing talent pool. The admission follows the recent mega-auction where several high-profile players went unsold.

Sophie Molineux fetched the highest price at the auction, Rs 1.10 crore, bought by Mumbai Indians. The figure reflects the premium placed on proven overseas all-rounders.

The sessions are expected to consider adding two or more franchises ahead of the 2028 season.

CricHubb Take

The league's rapid growth in popularity has outpaced its structure; adding teams could spread talent more evenly and reduce the number of players left without a contract each year.
