BCCI president says fitness and performance decide Kohli and Rohit selection

BCCI president Mithun Manhas said Kohli and Rohit will be judged on fitness and form, not age, for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

BCCI president Mithun Manhas said selection of senior players including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the 2027 ODI World Cup will rest on fitness and performance, not age. The tournament will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November next year.

Manhas added that experience from Kohli, Rohit and Hardik Pandya will support Shubman Gill's leadership during the tournament. He said distributing responsibilities among senior players will ease the captain's workload.

Gill has already led Gujarat Titans and India. Manhas said the seniors' presence will be an advantage rather than a complication. Kohli will be 38 and Rohit will turn 40 during the World Cup.

The BCCI's public stance removes age as a selection criterion but shifts the burden onto Kohli and Rohit to prove they remain the best available options, a test that will play out across the next 12 months rather than a single series.
