Two more states are expected to vote on Big Bash privatisation within six to eight weeks, following Victoria's decision to sell the Renegades.

Cricket Australia expects Tasmania and Western Australia to decide within six to eight weeks whether to invite bids for stakes in their Big Bash League clubs. Victoria has already begun a sales process for a 100 per cent stake in the Melbourne Renegades.

CA chief executive Todd Greenberg said the three states are actively engaged in discussions about privatisation. Cricket Victoria has applied to trademark potential new names for a rebranded Melbourne team, including Rangers, Magic and Blazers.

Cricket Tasmania has indicated interest in selling a 49 per cent stake in the Hobart Hurricanes, while WA Cricket has also signalled willingness to test the market for the Perth Scorchers. The moves come after CA reported an $81.8 million net profit for the 2025-26 season, boosted by the home Ashes series.

The real test will be whether smaller states can still attract top talent once the richer franchises start throwing money at players, or whether the BBL ends up with a handful of well-funded clubs and everyone else scrambling for scraps.
