Craig Miles called time on his career Friday. The 32-year-old Gloucestershire seamer walked away to protect his mental health after 512 wickets across 16 seasons. He spent most of those years at Warwickshire, with loan spells at Durham and Glamorgan, and played a part in Gloucestershire's 2015 One-Day Cup win and Warwickshire's 2021 County Championship title. Miles pointed to the constant self-doubt and the uncertainty that comes with short contracts as the reasons he could no longer continue. Gloucestershire's director of cricket, Jon Lewis, said the club respected his decision and would help him move on.

County sides that rely on experienced seamers now face another gap in the market, and the next uncapped quick who steps up will have to decide how long he wants to stay in a system that still offers little security once the body or the mind starts to fray.
