Jordan Neill eyes Namibia series after injury setbacks

Jordan Neill returns from injury for Ireland's five-match ODI series against Namibia starting Thursday, with the tour serving as preparation for next year's World Cup qualifier.

Ireland all-rounder Jordan Neill said past injuries have made him hungrier to return strongly for the five-match ODI series against Namibia that begins on Thursday in Windhoek. The 21-year-old made his Ireland debut at 19 in 2025 but missed most of this year with injuries following his Test debut series in Bangladesh.

Neill was selected by new head coach Gary Wilson and said the tour offers an opportunity to stake a claim for next year's World Cup qualifier, which Namibia will co-host with South Africa and Zimbabwe. He described Bangladesh as one of the hardest places for a fast bowler and said dealing with setbacks early in his career will help him long-term.

The series marks the start of Ireland's preparations for the 2027 World Cup qualifier. Neill said the tour will help the side settle on a balanced ODI combination ahead of the more important qualification matches.

CricHubb Take

Neill's injury timeline mirrors the compressed development path many fast bowlers face when they debut young. The Namibia series gives him consecutive 50-over exposure that Bangladesh and subsequent injuries denied him. If he can stay fit through this block, the data from five matches will either confirm his place in the qualifier squad or push him back into domestic cricket for another cycle.
