Rohit Sharma backed new ODI captain Shubman Gill after their 255-run opening partnership in the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati. The stand is India's second-highest in the format, with Gill scoring an unbeaten 223 and Rohit making 101. Rohit told JioStar that Gill has shown clarity and direction as captain in his first year.

Rohit said Gill has a strong cricketing brain and knows what he wants, which is the most important quality for a captain. He added that their relationship has not changed since Gill took over and that he will continue to support the new captain. Rohit also emphasised that winning the 2027 ODI World Cup remains his primary goal.

Gill's unbeaten 223 is the fastest double century in ODI history, reached in 117 balls. India chased down 406 to win by eight wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Rohit said he wants to experience the feeling of winning another World Cup before he finishes his career.

Rohit's public endorsement of Gill's captaincy, delivered while still in the middle of the series, signals that the transition is complete and that the senior opener sees no need to reclaim the leadership role.
