Harry Brook faces challenge to curb rash dismissals under new regime

England want Harry Brook to move from reckless to ruthless in the post-Stokes-McCullum era.

Harry Brook tops the ICC Test batting rankings with an average of 53.63 from 39 matches. England’s new coaching staff, Joe Root and Andrew Fleming, want him to cut out the impulsive shots that keep producing soft dismissals.

His attacking approach helped fuel several collapses under the previous captain-coach setup. The middle-order batter has been told to keep the aggression while stretching his innings longer.

Tighter shot selection, they believe, can push his average higher without losing the scoring rate. The next series will show whether that balance holds.

Brook built those numbers on a free hand; the question now is whether Root and Fleming can keep the same output once the licence shrinks.
