Bahl says owning India Champions in WCL was a natural step
Bahl described the move as driven by his long-standing involvement in cricket and large-scale events rather than a commercial calculation.
Sumant Bahl, owner of India Champions in the World Championship of Legends, said his decision to buy a team was a natural progression given his background in hospitality and entertainment. Bahl, an ECB-qualified umpire who officiates in England, said the passion for cricket runs deep among Indians and required no external inspiration. He dismissed concerns about managing former international players such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Yusuf Pathan, stating the squad has maintained a close-knit and cooperative environment across three seasons. Bahl added that the tournament's appeal lies in bringing together former stars for fans in an intimate setting while maintaining competitive standards comparable to top leagues.

Bahl's ownership model shows that former players can be managed without friction when the environment prioritises familiarity over hierarchy, a template other franchise leagues may study as player power grows.
