Craig Miles retires at 32 to protect mental well-being

Miles ends a 16-year career after citing mental health pressures; Gloucestershire say they will support his transition.

Gloucestershire seamer Craig Miles has retired from professional cricket at the age of 32 to prioritise his mental well-being. The bowler, who took 512 wickets across all formats in a 16-year career, last played in June after returning to Gloucestershire following six years at Warwickshire.

Miles said the high expectations he placed on himself had compromised how he felt about his abilities and performances. He added that the volatility of cricket made continuing in the same way unsustainable.

Gloucestershire director of cricket Jon Lewis described the decision as brave and said the club would support Miles through his transition out of the game.

CricHubb Take

Miles's retirement at 32 shows that even players with long careers and proven records can reach a point where the mental cost outweighs the professional reward.
