Ayush Mhatre undergoes hamstring surgery, ruled out for three months
Mhatre had surgery on Thursday after a Grade 4 right hamstring tear; recovery expected to take two to three months.
Mumbai vice-captain Ayush Mhatre underwent surgery on his right hamstring at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday. The 19-year-old suffered a Grade 4 tear while running between the wickets on the first day of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match against Chandigarh on October 11.
Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala performed the procedure. Mhatre had already spent three months recovering from a left hamstring injury that ended his IPL season with Chennai Super Kings in April. The BCCI source said he is expected to take two to three months to return to competitive cricket. As of Friday morning, Mhatre had begun walking slowly with crutches.
Mumbai now need a new opening pair for the rest of the Ranji Trophy season. Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Divyaansh Saxena opened against Himachal Pradesh after Mhatre's injury.

Mhatre's second hamstring injury in six months raises questions about workload management for young players moving between age-group, IPL and first-class cricket. Mumbai's Ranji campaign now rests on how quickly their replacement openers can adapt.
