James Anderson's 26-year professional career faces an end after Lancashire decided against offering the 44-year-old a contract for the 2027 season. The decision forms part of a restructuring of the club's cricket department following the appointment of Richard Kenyon as chief executive and Paul Farbrace as director of cricket.

Anderson led Lancashire in the 2026 County Championship, taking 50 wickets at an average of 17.68 despite the team's second-from-bottom finish in Division Two. He was named the county's player of the year and finished among the leading wicket-takers in the division.

Anderson had been operating on successive one-year deals since retiring from England Tests in 2024. He claimed 443 first-class wickets for Lancashire across his career alongside 991 wickets in 188 Tests for England.

The decision signals a clear break from the one-year rolling contracts Anderson had operated under since his England retirement, suggesting Lancashire's new leadership prioritised a longer-term rebuild over retaining a 44-year-old legend.
