Jos Buttler ruled out of Australia white-ball tour after hamstring surgery

Buttler undergoes hamstring surgery and will miss England's white-ball tour of Australia.

Jos Buttler had surgery on his left hamstring and won't play England's white-ball tour of Australia. No return date has been set. He hurt the hamstring in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at Headingley last month, hitting 69 from 49 balls with five sixes before he pulled up. He retired hurt, came back, and didn't last long.

England lost that match but won the series without him. Buttler posted the news on Instagram from a hospital bed. His next cricket is pencilled in for the SA20 in January with Durban's Super Giants.

His central contract runs to September 2027, one year before the 50-over World Cup. Jordan Cox and Tom Banton, who covered for him in the Sri Lanka series, got new central contracts the same day the surgery was announced.

CricHubb Take

The real question is whether Cox and Banton can keep those central contracts if Buttler comes back fit in January. If either of them plays well in Australia, the selectors will have a choice to make between continuity and momentum going into 2027.
