Josh Inglis set to rejoin Australia squad ahead of second Test

Josh Inglis will rejoin Australia’s squad before the second Test against South Africa after recovering from a fractured finger sustained in the ODI series.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is set to rejoin Australia’s Test squad in South Africa after missing the ongoing series opener in Durban due to a finger injury. Inglis suffered the injury while wicketkeeping in the first ODI against South Africa on September 24 and returned to Australia for scans. Recent scans showed sufficient progress for him to avoid surgery.

According to The West Australian, Inglis will link up with the squad ahead of the second Test in Gqeberha starting October 18. He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in January 2025 and has played five matches, scoring 184 runs. Nic Maddinson opened in Durban and recorded a 33-ball duck, the longest duck by an Australian opener in Test history.

Inglis is not Australia’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Tests but could feature as a specialist batter if required. His return will add further selection options alongside Cameron Green, who is also recovering from an abdominal strain.

CricHubb Take

Inglis’s return forces a decision on Matthew Renshaw. The Queenslander scored 190 from No.5 in Durban; moving him back to open to accommodate Inglis would test Australia’s stated preference for batting flexibility.
