Mahela Jayawardene steps down as Mumbai Indians head coach
Mahela Jayawardene ends ten-year association with Mumbai Indians after three IPL titles during his tenure as head coach.
Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of Mumbai Indians, ending a ten-year association with the five-time IPL champions. He won three of their five titles during his first stint from 2017 to 2022.
Jayawardene returned in 2024 after Mark Boucher left. MI missed the playoffs in both seasons under him, finishing second-last in 2026. He also served as Global Head of Performance from 2022, overseeing MI's teams in other leagues.
Nita Ambani credited his calm leadership and integrity. Jayawardene called MI a very special part of his journey. The franchise hasn't named a replacement for IPL 2027.

The next coach inherits a side that hasn't reached the playoffs in two years and must show it can still attract top talent without Jayawardene's reputation pulling strings behind the scenes.
