Harmanpreet Kaur announced on Tuesday that she has stepped down as captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all formats. The 37-year-old made the announcement in a post on Instagram after a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati that assessed the team's performances.

Harmanpreet led India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is and guided the side to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 2025. She also led India to three Asia Cup titles and two Asian Games gold medals during her tenure.

She will continue to play for India across formats. Smriti Mandhana is the frontrunner to take over as the new captain.

Harmanpreet's exit removes the last direct link between India's 2025 World Cup-winning squad and its 2017 final team, completing a full generational transition at the top.
