Gardner says cricket provided escape during personal challenges
Ashleigh Gardner said cricket helped her cope with personal challenges following the breakdown of her marriage.
Australia vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner said cricket has provided a welcome escape during a difficult period in her personal life. She spoke at the Sydney Sixers' season launch on Monday following the breakdown of her marriage earlier this year.
Gardner thanked her teammates for their support and said winning the World Cup and success in The Hundred helped her maintain perspective. Cricket Australia backed her to continue as vice-captain despite public scrutiny.
The Sixers confirmed in July that Gardner would remain captain for the WBBL season. She said the club's support meant a lot to her during the challenging time.

The fact that both the national team and her franchise publicly backed her before the season started may have reduced the mental load compared to athletes who face ongoing uncertainty about their leadership roles.
