Matt Renshaw walked in at 124 for 6 and didn't leave until he'd made 190. The left-hander faced 397 balls against South Africa at Kingsmead, breaking Virat Kohli's record for runs scored with the tail since 2002.

He added 174 runs in partnerships with the lower order: 41 with Pat Cummins, 12 with Mitchell Starc, 134 with Nathan Lyon, and 21 with Josh Hazlewood. Australia reached 390 all out.

South Africa closed day two at 27 for 1, trailing by 363 runs. Josh Hazlewood had Ryan Rickelton out for a duck, while Wiaan Mulder took four for 68.

CricHubb Take

Renshaw's stand with Nathan Lyon rescued the innings — 134 runs between numbers seven and eight means Australia can now bowl with a full attack rather than protecting a damaged tail.
