Sydney Thunder signed New Zealand left-arm quick Trent Boult for BBL|16 on a one-year deal with full availability including finals. The 37-year-old will join fellow Kiwi Lockie Ferguson in a significant boost to the club's pace attack.

Boult played eight games for Melbourne Stars in the 2022-23 season and has featured across multiple T20 leagues since retiring from international cricket after the 2024 World Cup. New head coach Andrew Flintoff said the signing addresses the club's inability to take wickets with the new ball in recent seasons.

Eight New Zealand players have committed to BBL|16 clubs this season. Boult said he hopes to mirror Ferguson's impact both on and off the field while working with Flintoff to claim a trophy neither has won in their careers.

Flintoff's appointment and the Boult-Ferguson pairing signals Thunder's intent to rebuild around proven international experience rather than youth development.
