Rishi Dhawan backs Shubman Gill to captain India at 2027 ODI World Cup
Rishi Dhawan said Shubman Gill has the ability to lead India at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Former India pacer Rishi Dhawan said Shubman Gill will captain India at the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gill was appointed India's Test captain in May 2025 after Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format, then named ODI captain in October 2025.
Dhawan praised Gill for handling the dual responsibility of captaincy and batting without any visible impact on his performances. Gill has led India in 15 ODIs and 11 Tests so far.
Dhawan also backed the continued presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India's ODI setup, citing their fitness, current form and experience as valuable assets ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Dhawan's endorsement from outside the current setup matters because it separates Gill's captaincy from the question of whether Kohli and Rohit should play. The argument is that Gill can lead with both seniors present rather than replacing them.
