Gambhir's squad signals deliberate shift toward grooming Gill as long-term Test opener

Selectors prioritise red-ball cricket by resting Gill and Rahul for final ODIs and omitting Jadeja from 50-over plans.

The BCCI's decision to rest Shubman Gill from the final two ODIs while naming him Test captain shows a clear preference for grooming the 26-year-old as India's long-term red-ball opener. Gill will lead the side in both Tests against New Zealand, with the selectors prioritising the two-match series over the ODI leg. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has played only six ODIs since his debut in 2023, was omitted from the 50-over squads entirely.

Ravindra Jadeja's exclusion from the ODI side marks another departure from the previous selection approach. The all-rounder featured in the recent West Indies series but is no longer part of the plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Axar Patel has taken his place in the ODI squad, while the selectors retained both Jadeja and Washington Sundar for the Tests.

Mohammed Shami's continued absence despite strong domestic returns further illustrates the committee's preference for younger pacers. Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj earned recalls, while Gurnoor Brar and Manav Suthar missed out. The selectors have also split the ODI squad to manage workloads ahead of the Tests, with Kumar Kushagra and Tilak Varma added for the final two matches.

CricHubb Take

By dividing the ODI squad and resting established players, the selectors are treating the two Tests as the tour's defining assignment rather than a secondary concern after the white-ball matches.
