Wasim Jaffer claims Kohli felt bitter about Agarkar treatment before Test retirement

Jaffer said Kohli was unhappy with Agarkar's handling and could have continued playing Tests.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer said Virat Kohli appeared bitter about how he was treated under chief selector Ajit Agarkar and could have played more Test cricket. Kohli announced his retirement from the format on May 12 2025, days after Rohit Sharma and ahead of the England tour.

Jaffer rated Agarkar's three-year tenure seven out of ten, crediting India's white-ball success while questioning the handling of senior players. He cited the dropping of Suryakumar Yadav after the 2026 T20 World Cup, the exclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami from T20Is, and the treatment of Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran.

Agarkar's stint ended earlier this month with Pragyan Ojha appointed interim chief selector. Jaffer noted India won two T20 World Cups, the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy during that period.

Jaffer's reading frames Kohli's retirement as a selection failure rather than a personal choice.
