Sri Lanka Cricket announced a 16-member squad for the ODI tri-series in Pakistan, dropping former white-ball captain Charith Asalanka. The 30-year-old was omitted after scoring 1, 11 and 7 in three ODIs against England last month.

Kusal Mendis will captain the side. Pathum Nissanka was named in the squad but his participation remains subject to medical clearance. Sahan Arachchige and Avishka Fernando are the only new faces.

The tri-series begins on October 18 in Rawalpindi with Sri Lanka facing Pakistan. The final is scheduled for October 31 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Sri Lanka must finish in the top two to reach the summit clash.

Dropping Asalanka signals that Sri Lanka is prioritising form over experience with the World Cup less than a year away.
