Smriti Mandhana named India's new captain across formats
Smriti Mandhana replaces Harmanpreet Kaur as India's captain across all formats after the latter stepped down following the 2025 World Cup triumph.
Smriti Mandhana has been named India's new captain across all three formats after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down. Harmanpreet led India to their first 50-over World Cup title in 2025 and also guided the side to back-to-back Asian Games gold medals. She captained in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is during her tenure.
Harmanpreet said the decision was not easy and that she had given everything to the team and to Indian women's cricket. She added that she leaves the captaincy with peace because she believes the team is in a good place with talent, character and belief. The 37-year-old said captaincy may end but her love for Indian cricket never will.
India will host Zimbabwe for three T20Is and three ODIs from 16 October before touring South Africa in December. Mandhana will lead the side for the first time in the upcoming home series.
CricHubb Take
Mandhana inherits a side that has just won its first global title; the challenge will be sustaining that momentum across longer tours and red-ball commitments.
