Mumbai Indians named Kieron Pollard their head coach for IPL 2027 on Saturday. He replaces Mahela Jayawardene, who left after the team finished ninth in 2026. Pollard played 189 matches for Mumbai between 2010 and 2022, scoring 3,412 runs and taking 69 wickets while winning five titles.
Pollard spent the last four seasons as the team's batting coach before the promotion. Nita Ambani said Pollard knows what it means to wear the Mumbai badge and that she is confident he will bring the same commitment to the role. Pollard said the franchise must put the team ahead of individual egos and bring back its identity at the Wankhede before the December auction.
Mumbai have failed to reach the final since 2020 and have finished bottom of the table twice in the last five seasons. Pollard will oversee the retention list and squad planning ahead of the mini-auction in Goa.
CricHubb Take
Pollard's elevation signals that Mumbai value continuity and institutional memory over external coaching trends, betting that a former player can restore the franchise's identity faster than another outsider.
