Mohammed Shami retires from Test cricket after 64 matches
Mohammed Shami retired from Test cricket after 64 matches and 229 wickets, ending a 13-year red-ball career that began in 2013.
Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday after a 13-year career. He played 64 Tests and took 229 wickets. Shami made his debut against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2013.
The 36-year-old fast bowler said he would continue in white-ball formats and remain available for domestic multi-day matches if required for fitness. He thanked teammates, coaches, family, the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal in an emotional social media post. His final Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship Final.
Shami finished as India's sixth-highest wicket-taking fast bowler in the format with six five-wicket hauls. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said the decision was Shami's own. Former India captain Ravi Shastri questioned why selectors did not give Shami another chance.

Shami's departure removes a proven swing bowler from India's Test attack at a time when the pace battery is already stretched thin.
