Nic Maddinson has been recalled to Australia's Test squad for the series against South Africa after recovering from testicular cancer. The 34-year-old was diagnosed in April 2025 and completed chemotherapy in July before being cleared to resume his career.

Maddinson made five Big Bash appearances last season and scored 126 for New South Wales against Victoria in the domestic one-day competition on Sunday. He played three Tests for Australia in late 2016, with his last appearance coming against Pakistan at the MCG.

Sam Harper was also added to the squad as cover for injured wicketkeeper Josh Inglis. Maddinson and Harper provide options ahead of the first Test in Durban on October 9.

CricHubb Take

Maddinson's recall shows the value selectors place on experience, but his long absence from first-class cricket makes his readiness for Durban an open question.
