Nita Ambani said Mahela Jayawardene's calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game meant a great deal to Mumbai Indians. The Sri Lankan stepped down as head coach on Saturday, ending a 10-year association with the franchise.

Jayawardene coached Mumbai Indians in two stints from 2017 to 2022 and again from 2025 to 2026. The team won three IPL titles under his guidance in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also served as Global Head of Performance in 2022, overseeing the franchise's expansion into international leagues.

Mumbai Indians will announce a new head coach next week. Candidates reportedly under consideration include Kieron Pollard, Hemang Badani and Rahul Dravid. The franchise finished ninth in IPL 2026, winning only four of 14 matches.

CricHubb Take

Jayawardene's departure removes the architect of Mumbai Indians' last three titles at a moment when the franchise needs cultural continuity more than fresh ideas.
